Why hosting location matters for a Zambian organisation
Most email hosting sold in Zambia is resold from data centres in Europe or the United States. That is fine for many businesses, but it has consequences worth understanding:
- Jurisdiction. Data stored abroad is subject to that country's laws and disclosure orders as well as Zambia's. Organisations handling personal data under the Data Protection Act 2021 need to know where their processors keep it.
- Latency. Every webmail click, IMAP sync and SMTP send crosses an international link. Locally hosted mail keeps those round trips short for users in Zambia.

Getting started from Zambia
- Register or bring your .co.zm, .zm or international domain. Registration inside the platform is on the roadmap; for now you keep the domain at your registrar.
- Sign up with the domain and an admin address.
- Publish the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records shown in the dashboard, or move DNS to ontechmail and let it seed them.
- Create mailboxes, connect clients, install OMail.

Migrating an existing domain
Nothing changes at your present host until you switch the MX record, so set up and test first. Ontech offers an IMAP import to copy existing mail into the new mailboxes, which suits moves from Titan, cPanel and Google Workspace accounts. For users inside Zambia, a locally hosted mailbox means webmail, IMAP and SMTP traffic stays on regional networks rather than crossing international links, which usually shortens round trips. Delivery to recipients abroad still travels the normal internet path.
